West of Dead

West of Dead is a classic twin-stick shooter combining the grittiness of the Wild West with the darkness and mercilessness of the afterlife, welcome to Purgatory.

You play as an amnesiac, dead man William Mason, who to me resembled a western ghost rider.

Grab your favourite 6 shooter and blast your way through the procedurally generated levels but be sure to make use of the games cover mechanism to avoid the bullets and attacks of your enemies or it’ll be game over!

As you work your way through the dark and ominous levels you gain sins from some fallen enemies which you can ‘purged’ of by a shaman in return you’ll unlock abilities which will be vital as you advance through the story on your way to remembering who the hell you were and finding a release from this hellish nightmare you now find yourself in.

The gameplay is fun and challenging, which is what you would expect from a strategic twin-stick shooter. The graphics are like something straight out of a comic book, they feel like they could be inspired by the art of Red Dead Redemption, which is not a bad thing at all.

Ron Pearlman provides the voice of William Mason, the familiarity of that deep, smooth and cool voice does definitely add some credibility to the character but I do think the dialogue needs work before launch.

West of Dead is set to be released across all major platforms, this footage is taken from the recent (and fairly unknown) XBOX One Beta. It’s been announced that the game will be part of the XBOX Game Pass from launch. The exact date of release is still unknown, but now the beta has been released I would guess the full release can’t be that far away.

So if your looking for a challenging, gritty twin-stick shooter then West of Dead is definitely worth keeping a eye out for.
